Design by Nature | Erica Tanov
This month, our Design Book Club selection invites us to slow down, observe, and take inspiration from the world around us. In Design by Nature, Erica Tanov reminds us that beauty is everywhere—we just have to step outside and look.
Erica begins her book by sharing how she sees the world, that when you pay attention to things as small as cracks in the sidewalk, inspiration flows and creativity is sparked.
Here are some highlights we enjoyed. This entire book is a gem though! One that you will constantly go back to for inspiration or simply to feel good while you flip the pages!
Nature as a Muse
Tanov encourages us to see nature as an endless source of creativity. The textures of tree bark, the gentle curve of a leaf, or the earthy tones of a stone—all of these can inform and elevate our home and make us feel connected to nature at all times.
One of our favorite takeaways? Bringing these elements inside. Whether it’s woven baskets that mimic the organic textures of tree bark or a simple branch in a vintage vase, nature has a way of grounding a space and making it feel calm and intentional.
The Art of Collecting
Nature offers treasures if we take the time to notice. A feather on a morning walk, a seashell from a past trip, or a beautifully worn stone—all of these objects tell a story. Incorporating found pieces into your home adds depth, nostalgia, and a sense of connection to the world outside.
We love the idea of setting out trays to display natural finds. It's a simple and ever-evolving way to bring the outdoors in, while also honoring the beauty in everyday moments.
Designing with Playfulness
One of Tanov's messages we loved best. Play. Sketch, collect, experiment, and allow nature to guide your creative process. Whether you’re designing a space, arranging flowers, or choosing textiles, let your instincts and observations lead the way.
