We hope you enjoy her interview.
First, could you please share some of your background and a brief summary of what you do?
I was born in Morioka, Japan, and I am currently based in Tokyo.
I am the founder and designer of Fog Linen Work, a brand that creates timeless, functional items made from natural materials.
My work revolves around designing and curating everyday essentials that bring beauty and practicality to daily life.
Over the years, the brand has expanded to include a wide range of home goods, clothing, and accessories, all designed with a simple yet thoughtful aesthetic.
I believe in creating pieces that feel natural, age beautifully, and seamlessly fit into different lifestyles.
Where are you currently living?
I am currently living in Tokyo, Japan.
Can you please describe the energy and culture of your home city?
Tokyo is a city of contrasts. It is incredibly fast-paced and dynamic, yet you can also find quiet, peaceful corners tucked away amid all the movement. There’s a deep appreciation for tradition alongside a strong drive for innovation. The culture here is detail-oriented, and people take pride in craftsmanship and aesthetics, which I find inspiring in my own work.
What inspired you to take the path of becoming a designer and creating your line, Fog Linen?
I originally started my career in buying and sourcing goods, and I never expected to become a designer myself. However, I found that the simpler the item, the harder it was to find exactly what I was looking for. That’s what led me to start designing my own products.
Ultimately, where does your creativity come from?
My creativity comes from the necessities of daily life—things I personally want to use.
What inspired the name “Fog Linen”?
The "Fog" in Fog Linen comes from my favorite cities, San Francisco and London. I hoped that one day our products would be carried in stores there, or that I could create items that fit seamlessly into the lifestyle of these cities.
We know that some of your goods are manufactured in Lithuania, what drew you to have your line produced here?
I first traveled to Lithuania because my great-aunt, my grandmother’s younger sister, hosted a Lithuanian exchange student at her home. This connection eventually led her to open a Japanese restaurant in Lithuania!
Also when I was first exploring linen production, I discovered that Lithuania has a long history of producing high-quality linen fabrics. I visited the country and was impressed by the craftsmanship and deep-rooted expertise in working with linen. It felt like the right place to bring my vision to life while also supporting traditional artisans and ethical production.
We would love to know; what is your favorite thing that you have designed and what are your top 3 favorite products from Fog Linen?
• Kitchen Cloth – No matter how many I have, I always feel like I could use more. I use them every day, and they are an essential part of my daily routine.
• Bed Linen – Every night when I get into bed with Fog Linen sheets, I feel truly happy and grateful for the work I do. It’s a small but meaningful moment of comfort.
• Linen Towels – I love the feel of our linen towels on my skin after a bath. Their texture and absorbency make them one of my favorite items.
What do you try to communicate through your line?
I believe that Fog Linen products are designed to be neutral and versatile, fitting seamlessly into various interiors and lifestyles. Through our products, I hope to contribute to and support different customers' daily lives in a meaningful way.
What role in general do you think artists play in society? What are your thoughts on being an artist in today's world?
I have never thought of myself as an artist. I simply design and produce everyday items in a straightforward and practical way.
On a more personal level:
Do you have daily rituals or routines that are essential to your well-being and success as an entrepreneur?
Every day, I do a 10-minute exercise routine with my partner using a radio program. Additionally, once a week, I attend a three-hour evening stretch class with friends. I believe that staying active with regular exercise is essential for overall well-being.
I also value staying connected with many friends and making time for meaningful communication.
What’s your favorite artwork? Or Artist?
I love the works of Misato Ogihara, and we have collaborated with her on products for Fog Linen. Her paintings evoke a range of emotions when I look at them, which is something I truly appreciate.
What are your favorite design books at the moment?
Simple Home by Mark and Sally Bailey
Is there a creative medium you would like to pursue but have not yet tried?
I would love to explore ceramics. There’s something very meditative about working with clay, and I think it would be wonderful to create everyday objects with my hands.
We share similar ideas about home, and how it's essential for our well-being. Could you please share 3 guiding values you have for the care and keeping of your home?
• Simplicity – I believe in keeping only what is useful and beautiful, creating a space that feels calm and uncluttered.
• Natural Materials – Surrounding myself with linen, wood, and ceramics brings warmth and a sense of connection to nature.
• Space – Rather than having many things, I value having open space in my home.
What’s the best piece of advice for living well you have ever been given?
The best piece of advice for living well that I have ever been given is "Less is more." This philosophy resonates deeply with me, as I believe that simplicity brings clarity, beauty, and a sense of peace to both life and design.
